The chosen applicant will gain practical work experience within an industry setting comprising individuals of diverse talents across computer science, molecular biology, statistics and genetics.  He/she will be part of a dynamic bioinformatics team, advancing the state of art in genomic data analysis through application data transformational pipelines and numerical manipulations.  These techniques will be applied to building new clinical assays, matching patients to therapeutics, solving client-specific statistical problems and creation of new software tools.  The applicant will also learn principles of software validation and testing, software versioning tools, software engineering and art of transitioning from research to production environments. 

The training period would initially extend across the applicant’s scholastic semester, which would involve at minimum ½ time commitment commitment but could extending during the school year into a part-time commitment.  


  • Application of statistical modeling and/or machine learning to next generation sequencing (NGS) or microarray data
  • Development of robust, reliable and efficient software from statistical modeling results
  • Characterizing the accuracy and limitations of these tools
  • Demonstration of results in peer-reviewed publications and international NGS analysis challenges
  • Communication of analysis results to laboratory staff and clients
  • Participation in NGS assay validation
  • Assist with/ consult on client specific projects


  • Skills in download and use of publically available tools (GitHub, BitBucket)
  • Proficiency in scripting languages: Python, Perl
  • Excellent skills using at least one statistical programming language (e.g. SAS, R) and data visualization
  • Strong familiarity working in Linux/UNIX environment, including shell scripting grep/sed/awk
  • Familiarity with designing experiments and scientific method to prove hypotheses
  • Some experience using at least one (normal or JIT) compiled computer language (e.g. C/C++, Java)
  • Experience giving presentations of analysis results to non-technical audiences
  • Exposure to data analysis using next generation sequencing, multi-analytic instrumentation and other *omic data


Enrollment in existing undergraduate or graduate-level program with research and coursework from data-intensive fields, such as statistics, data science, machine learning or bioinformatics.  Applicant must provide examples of both programming code and data analysis presentation(s).
