Big Data Engineer, Spark/Scala

AIML, RWAS Technology

You will be working in a team of highly talented Engineers, Data Scientists, QA and Product Owners. Your main responsibility will be to write highly performant and scalable code that will run on top of our Big Data platform (Spark/Hive/Impala/Hadoop). Also, you will be working closely with the Data Science team to support them in the ETL process. You may also participate to the development of our frontend application (ReactJs, Go).

A typical day might include:

  • Working in a cross-functional team – alongside talented Engineers, Data Scientists, QA and Product Owners
  • Working in an Agile Environment; active participation to daily stand up and other Scrum ceremonies
  • Designing and building scalable and high-performant code using Scala and Spark
  • Depending on your experience you may design and develop REST APIs using Go to serve our frontend
  • Proactively writing unit and integration tests (TDD)
  • Doing code review for other team members
  • Enforcing coding standards and best practices
  • Implementing ETL and Feature Extractions pipelines
  • Monitoring cluster (Spark/Hadoop) performance
  • Working in a geographically dispersed team
  • Working in an environment with a significant number of unknowns – both technically and functionally.
  • Documenting your design and development

Our ideal candidate: Experience

•BSc or MSc in Computer Science or related field

•Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with personal interest in subjects such as math/statistics, machine learning and AI

•Solid knowledge of data structures and algorithms

•Experience working in an Agile environment using Test Driven Development (TDD) and Continuous Integration (CI)

•Experience refactoring code with scale and production in mind.

Our ideal candidate: Tech Skills

•Proficient in Scala, Java and SQL

•Strong experience with Apache Spark, Hive/Impala and HDFS

•Practical experience in the design and development of REST APIs

•Familiar with Unix/Linux, Git, Jenkins and ScalaTest

•Experience with integration of data from multiple data sources

•Experience with NoSQL databases, such as Elasticsearch, MongoDB, Cassandra

•Experience with any of the following distributions of Hadoop - Cloudera/MapR/Hortonworks.

Bonus points for experience with:

•Other functional Languages such as Haskell and Clojure

•Other languages such as Go, Python

•Experience in design and development of Microservices

•Apache Kafka, Apache Ignite and Druid

•Container technologies such as Docker

•Cloud Platforms technologies such as Marathon/Apache Mesos, Kubernetes and Apache Brooklyn.

•Big Data ML toolkits such as SparkML, Mahout and H2O

Our Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence team within the Real-World & Analytics Solutions (RWAS) Technology division is a fast-growing group of collaborative, enthusiastic, and entrepreneurial individuals passionate about developing technology solutions of real world patient level data. In our never-ending quest for opportunities to harness the value of Real World Evidence (RWE), we are at the centre of IQVIA’s advances in areas such as machine learning and artificial intelligence. Our efforts improve under-diagnosis of rare and complex diseases, personalized treatment response profiles, disease progression predictions, and clinical decision-support tools.

You will join this high-profile team to work on ground-breaking problems in health outcomes across disease areas including Oncology, Neurology, Chronic diseases such as diabetes, and a variety of very rare conditions. The Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence team work hand-in-hand with commercial teams, statisticians, epidemiologists and disease area experts across the wider global RWE Solutions team, leveraging a vast variety of anonymous patient-level information from sources such as electronic health records, claims data, genomics, wearables. The data encompasses IQVIA’s access to over 530 million anonymised patients as well as bespoke, custom partnerships with healthcare providers and payers.
