Senior Data Scientist - Machine Learning
Job description
Senior Data Scientist
AI for Healthcare & MedTech, Real World Analytics & AI
Our AI for Healthcare and MedTech team within the Real-World Analytics and AI (RWAAI) division is a fast-growing group of collaborative, enthusiastic, and entrepreneurial individuals. We are at the centre of IQVIA’s pursuit of machine learning and cutting-edge statistical methods to advance healthcare. Our efforts improve under-diagnosis of rare diseases, personalised treatment response profiles, disease progression predictions, and clinical decision-support tools and have a direct impact on patient care.
We are looking for an innovative, collaborative, intellectually curious and entrepreneurial Senior Data Scientist based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to join our Healthcare Data Science team. This is an exciting opportunity to join a fast-moving start-up style group within one of the world's leading human data science companies. The primary aim of the role is to lead a large, high profile and prestigious client (Government) project within Saudi Arabia, to develop multiple ML solutions on highly complex, large-scale patient healthcare data to deliver patient-level alerts to healthcare providers. A secondary aim is to assist the broader team in developing similar solutions across the world.
The successful candidate may be expected to work in IQVIA offices and / or on client site three days per week.
A typical day might include:
- Working closely with the clients in Saudi Arabia, building up working relationships with the key stakeholders in the region, and leading the data science workstreams on this project. This will involve leading a remote sub-team of 3-4 data scientists who will be based across the US, UK and India.
- Working with the team and client to shape and develop requirements for answering ambitious life science problems (e.g. can we predict a rare disease diagnosis or an optimal dosing frequency in patients?) along with solutions for applying predictive analytics methods within infrastructures specific to each healthcare provider project. Addressing those requirements by developing and applying appropriate ETL processes (for feature creation from our raw data) and machine learning methodology (for constructing predictive models in an unbiased manner).
- Due to local requirements that can restrict international data sharing in certain scenarios, there will be times where this role involves a significant amount of hands-on technical work with Saudi Arabian healthcare data, and other times where tasks can be distributed to the remote team to support on, and needs to be closely managed. This role requires being comfortable with both approaches.
- Generally supporting projects being executed by our data science team, including discussing methodology questions, providing technical support, reviewing code and outputs, and coordinating with our client-facing consulting teams around the world.
- Researching machine learning techniques that could be used to improve our offering.
- Communicating technical concepts and analytical outputs to a diverse set of stakeholders (internal and external).
- Proactively identifying opportunities for innovation and areas for improvement across the workflow.
Ideally you will have:
- Strong written and verbal English and Arabic skills.
- Substantial industry/academic experience building machine learning algorithms
- Previous experience in managing complex projects and leading a team of 2-4 data scientists.
- Prior experience and keen interest in working directly with clients and non-technical stakeholders, presenting ideas and results regularly, and helping them to understand complex technical topics. Needs strong client management and presentation skills.
- Postgraduate degree or higher in machine learning, computer science, statistics, or another STEM field.
- Knowledge of supervised machine learning methods, such as regularized regressions, ensemble tree classifiers (e.g. XGBoost), support vector machines, etc. Good understanding of classical statistical methods, such as fitting regression models, inference testing and sampling.
- Strong scientific programming skills (ideally in Python) and a track record of working on a range of computational challenges (both within and outside machine learning development).
- Appetite for applying new and existing technologies to challenging problems in healthcare, i.e. motivated by solving the problem.
- Excellent communication skills, including ability to present technical concepts clearly (in writing, face-to-face discussions and on conference calls), write project analyses, pitch ideas effectively and persuasively to clients / internal stakeholders, etc.
- Excellent organisation skills and ability to deliver results to deadlines.
- A proactive, innovative, and pragmatic approach to problem solving and the ability to think critically and independently, able to work as part of a cross-functional team.
Bonus points for:
- Experience in an informatics/data science team of a health systems/IDN, including knowledge of healthcare data, EMR integration, types of environments used for data solution development/deployment, etc.
- PySpark / big data experience.
- Experience of code development in collaborative environments (e.g. doing code reviews through pull requests).
- Knowledge of epidemiology / biostatistics, particularly analytical issues relating to studies of treatment effectiveness, disease progression, adherence, healthcare utilisation, etc.
