Senior Medical Writer, Scientific Delivery Center

This position resides within the newly created Scientific Delivery Center, a part of the Medical / Scientific unit within the fast-growing RWS US Business Unit. The Scientific Delivery Center will attract talented early-career individuals into the organization with a structured development program to allow them to rapidly develop their careers. The Center will support the delivery of projects across Drug Safety, Disease Burden, Natural History, Health Outcomes, Healthcare Resource Utilization, Patient Journeys and Comparative Effectiveness. We predominantly use retrospective database methods where possible and primary data collection methods (e.g. chart review) where not.

The breadth of client base and expertise across multiple delivery methods, access to novel data sources and new techniques that we deploy provides a varied and diverse work environment. Almost all of the RWS team members work remotely – a culture that long predates the global pandemic.

Role purpose and responsibilities

This role will focus on the medical writing requirements arising from conducting health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) and drug safety studies, as these are often externally published via the peer-reviewed literature. The outputs in general will primarily comprise of scientific manuscripts, podium presentations, posters and abstracts for medical journals and conferences. The outputs will additionally comprise of protocols, statistical analysis plans and scientific reports.

The responsibilities will be as follows:

  • Development of the key story lines for the documents to achieve the clients’ objectives
  • Writing of the manuscripts, podium presentations, posters and abstracts based on studies that the team carry out
  • Development of the structure of protocols, statistical analysis plans and scientific reports (with significant input provided by team members such as epidemiologists and statisticians) and then writing up the document once the inputs have been received.
  • Project management tasks will include:
    • Manuscript and abstract submission process
    • Inputs needed for the documents (e.g., from academic thought leaders, team colleagues, clients etc). Includes accurately specifying the inputs required
    • A graphic design team to produce clear and appealing conference-ready posters
    • A document creation team who will format documents to a consistent and high-quality standard
  • Conduct pragmatic literature reviews to draft meaningful introduction and discussion sections and ensure documents reflect up to date thinking on each subject
  • Accurate referencing within the documents
  • Support strategic journal selection in conjunction with clients, trading-off impact factor vs other considerations (speed of publishing)
  • Assist the upskilling of the wider Medical/Scientific team to improve overall writing capability
  • Maintain a current bibliography of team dissemination efforts

Qualifications, skills, and experience 

  • Master's Degree in a life sciences field such as public health, epidemiology or health economics and policy
  • Significant experience in both strategic and tactical aspects of medical writing, including being the primary writer on peer-reviewed publications
  • Proven success in communicating scientific information
  • Familiarity with health economics and HTA (health technology assessment)
  • Familiarity with copyright laws
  • Good understanding of study methodology used in this area, especially retrospective database designs
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills  
  • Reference management skills, excellent Microsoft office skills, and high attention to detail
  • Self-motivated with a strong desire to learn quickly and independently
  • Time-management and organizational skills
  • Flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with client management is a plus
  • Familiar with data visualization and presentation
  • Keen to work as a member of a diverse, multi-cultural team
