Purpose of role: 
• To provide overall leadership of the Medical Writing function and management team in Japan, with overall responsibility for customer satisfaction, staff development and engagement, quality, resourcing, and financial performance. 
• To be an active participant in the Global Medical Writing management team, involved in developing global business strategy and supporting growth, staff development, and high quality in all regions.

Main responsibilities:
• Direct, guide, and support the Medical Writing function in Japan, and provide technical guidance when required
• Line management of senior Medical Writing staff in Japan, including group managers, and senior oversight of all staff
• Monitor financial performance of the Medical Writing team in Japan; accountable for meeting regional targets
• Review and provide input into new business proposals and budgets for all types of Medical Writing services provided by the group
• Meet with and present to customers and potential customers to discuss new business opportunities and ongoing projects
• Effectively manage resourcing, headcount, and staff development across the group
• Participate in management and strategic planning activities for the Global Medical Writing business unit, develop regional strategy for success, and ensure full integration of Medical Writing Japan into the global team
• Collaborate effectively cross-functionally and globally, both internally and with customers, on a wide range of issues, and be an effective point of escalation when necessary

Qualifications, experience, and skills required:

•Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a life science-related discipline. A post-graduate qualification may be an advantage

•At least 10 years’ broad-ranging experience as a medical writer within a pharmaceutical research environment, with a focus on regulatory writing

•High degree of fluency in both oral and written English

•A collaborative and open communication style and management approach

•Demonstrated success in managing and motivating senior level employees and ability to delegate appropriately and with confidence

•Ability to positively influence employees in a professional manner, through example

•Ability to communicate an inspiring vision for the group and help others understand and value their role in it

•Financial awareness, and experience in budgeting Medical Writing tasks and defining scope of work
