PURPOSE

The Instrument Specialist (IS) position will perform instrument maintenance and repair of analytical instrumentation and laboratory equipment. The primary goal of the Instrument Specialist is to minimize analytical instrument and equipment downtime. The Instrument Specialist will work closely and cooperatively with Management and scientific staff to achieve this goal.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform preventative maintenance on analytical instruments while keeping accurate records in accordance with pertinent documentation standards.
  • Efficiently and correctly repair disabled analytical instruments and laboratory equipment to ensure minimal downtime.
  • Maintain all repair records to ensure compliance with pertinent regulatory requirements.
  • Establish PM programs for new analytical instruments and laboratory equipment while maintaining and updating existing PM programs.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of instrument consumables and spare parts.
  • Work closely with Purchasing to ensure spare parts and consumables inventory records and database are kept up to date.
  • Install and place in service new analytical instrumentation and laboratory equipment.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Experience with equipment and instrumentation trouble shooting;
  • Knowledge or experience in a GLP, GMP, and/or GCP setting is preferred;
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with word processing and database software;
  • Monitor failures and setup problems to determine need for appropriate verification;
  • Install and configure new instruments and equipment;
  • Operate various test instruments and special test fixtures;
  • Develop testing procedures and strategies;
  • Prepare detailed and accurate documentation of testing performed.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or technology related field, or Associate degree with two years of relevant work experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS  

Sit at a desk or table with some walking, standing, bending, stooping, or carrying of light objects. Occasional unaided lifting of objects up to 50lbs.
